If our bodies are a language, what do they say to each other?
My paintings aim to address that question: exploring the body as a vessel for complex, powerful emotion. I begin with an abstract acrylic base, guided by a single, often visceral feeling, then layer charcoal and oil to gradually reveal the figure. Every layer is present as they blend into each other. Softening the boundaries between body and environment and inviting interpretation beyond the literal. My work attempts to communicate an unspoken discomfort through the use of bold, bright color that both contrasts with and emphasizes heavier themes: the change of skin pigment due to the blood vessels beneath, bones underneath skin and odd bodily positions with uncertain protrusions. Each figure is different, but they are always the same – a vessel for primordial communication.
Sydney Harrington is an artist from Birmingham, Alabama. After graduating from art school in 2020, she followed her dream westward and has called Bozeman, Montana home for the past five years. In addition to her painting practice, she has also pursued a passion for woodworking, bringing a hands-on, tactile dimension to her creative life.
Harrington’s figurative work explores the human body as a vessel for powerful, unspoken emotion. Her use of bright, bold color contrasts with the emotional intensity of her subjects—examining the body’s silent ability to communicate what words cannot.
